Why did you choose Homestay to stay in Japan?
I chose to stay in Japan to explore my love for the country, meet new people and decide whether I'd like to study it at university.
What was/were convenient in Japan? What kind of thing were you interested in?
Everything is convenient in Japan! Everyone is so helpful and everything is easy to find and understand (with a bit of help). I was interested in visiting temples, shrines and of course all of the centre of Tokyo. I loved all the buildings and shops and the excellent architecture.
How did you spend your spare time in Japan?
I spend most of my time working at a business. Outside of that, I went away for a week to Mikura-jima to swim with dolphins. I also did karate, had tea lessons and ate great food at restaurants.
Tell us the most surprising thing while you were in Japan.
The most surprising thing was how welcoming everyone was. In England, sometimes people can be a bit reserved if they don't know you very well. When I was in Japan, everyone I met was extremely polite and made me feel at home all the time. I loved it.
How did you communicate with Japanese when you couldn’t explain it in Japanese?
Most of the time, the people I talked to had a little bit of English - far more Japanese than I had! So I could talk to them in my language a little. Other than that, I found it hard to communicate as my Japanese is so bad.
Was your Japanese ability improved during homestay?
Yes, I took lessons in the language so my Japanese became much better. Hopefully I'll practise and it'll improve even more.
What Japanese foods do you like?
I loved almost all the food I had there. From ramen to beef, and rice to lobster from Hokkaido, the food was certainly a highlight. I visited some incredible restaurants, but the best food was home cooked - like the soba we made ourselves at a party!
What Japanese foods do you prefer not to eat ?
There wasn't much I didn't like. I don't like a lot of spicy food, so too much wasabi was not great. But apart from that it was fine.
Please tell us some memorable thing or episode during your homestay.
I have so many stories! Well, one day my friend took me to Kamakura and we walked around temples all day. We only stopped for a little bit for cold soba for lunch - we walked the rest of the day. It was tiring, but I saw a huge number of shrines and had a great time. Another time, we had a party at the Watanabe household and saw fireworks from her balcony. It was amazing.
Please tell us the thing that you got from homestay.
I learned that the Japanese are very polite and trustworthy, and you should never be afraid to try new things.
Please write a messages to the people who are coming to Japan from now on.
Go to Japan! Get ready for a country like no other. You'll have a great time and you'll be treated well if you treat them well. Never be afraid to try new things and don't spend too much time in sun!
